Per SBC 303, a geotechnical investigation must include: exploratory borings, Standard Penetration Test SPT (ASTM D1586), grain size analysis (ASTM D422), and Atterberg limits (ASTM D4318). High-rise buildings and critical facilities require additional tests such as CBR and Plate Load.

Soil Testing in Riyadh — Collapsible Soil and Gypsum Layers
Riyadh's soil presents two major geotechnical hazards: collapsible soil that appears firm when dry but collapses suddenly upon wetting (causing differential settlement), and gypsum layers hidden beneath hard caliche crusts that dissolve over time to form voids and sinkholes.
